Fear not, weight loss is not torture by cardio

Many people I discuss weight loss with are surprised to learn that it does not typically include pounding the treadmill until the weight sweats out of the body.

For starters, any good fitness programme must be designed to allow the client to feel as though it is something they can - and want to - stick to. That means it must be enjoyable, so if you are someone who wants to lose weight but resents cardio, it is not going to do you much good to start a programme heavy on cardio.

Even if you are willing to struggle through a few weeks of sessions, if you are that person, you are not going to stick to it, barring the few exceptions who fall in love with such workouts. And that is possible.

But even beyond the want, science supports resistance training as an incredibly useful method to burning body fat. That surprises many, but there is an abundance of research to suggest that lifting weight can allow clients to shift weight effectively.

It is not the only approach. Research also suggests increasing V02 max, which comes with cardio training, is extremely effective in burning body fat (and for this purpose, we will put the different types of body fan under one umbrella term), but for most clients, it is more than sufficient to focus on one, and even more efficient if they are willing to focus on both.

But with weight training, we can help you shift weight progressively, especially when paired with non-structured exercise. And that does not mean lifting olympic-sized weights, either. Clients will always begin with a weight that is comfortable to them and work their way up slowly and progressively, making this method of losing weight not only highly effective, but also highly accessible.

What is non-structured exercise?

When we talk about non-structured exercise, we are speaking about exercise that does not come under any of the training you do in a fitness plan, or even in any sporting hobbies. This is the small stuff, for lack of a better term.

Non-structured exercise is getting enough steps in per day, it's taking the stairs instead of the elevator, it's parking a little further away from the shop or even putting in a few hours of cleaning around the house.

All of this stuff is part of the calorie burning we all need to do in a day, and we look past it because of how big a role exercise can play. But the non-structured-exercise actually makes up the majority of calorie burning for most people, and when we can crank that up a notch by doing some of the small things we just mentioned, and when paired with resistance training, and perhaps a touch of cardio for those willing, we can achieve remarkable results over time.

So, fear not, weight loss can be achieved in many ways, and if you want to learn more, get in touch, and we can chat about your concerns with no obligation.

Have a wonderful day, and STRIVE for more.
